RED LIZARDS SUPPORT HOMETOWN RACE
By Jeff Malmquist
For the fifth consecutive year, Team Red Lizard will be providing pace groups for the Portland Marathon. Steve Trautwein is in charge of the 2007 Lizard Pace effort. Steve advises that this year we're offering 14 running pace groups: 3:00, 3:10, 3:15, 3:20, 3:30, 3:40, 3:45, 3:50, 4:00, 4:15, 4:30, 4:45, 5:00, 5:30. (Note that the 3:15 and 3:45 groups are the Boston qualifying times for M35-39 and W35-39, respectively.) Also, we are going to try to offer 5 walking pace groups: 6:00, 6:30, 7:00, 7:30, 8:00.
Pace leaders will run their assigned time with TERRAIN ADJUSTED splits specifically tailored for the Portland Marathon course. This means we'll go a little slower up the hills and a little faster down the hills. Click here to see the splits. We'll have special Team Red Lizard pace bands for all of the pace groups. They are really neat!
Just like past year, pace leaders will run half marathon legs and transition to the 2nd leg pacer at the half marathon mark. The 2nd leg pacer will shadow the 1st leg pacer for about a mile or so to make sure they're on pace and then they'll take over and run to the finish. We'll have a competition between pacers to see who can get closest to their target pace. The winner will receive a fabulous prize; one of the snazzy new TRL warmup jackets!
Oregon Live is providing $1000 to TRL to support the pacing effort. This will pay for our pace leader tech-shirts, pace balloons and pace bands. Thank you Oregon Live!
This year each pace leader will have, in addition to new pacing tech-shirts, larger and more visible pace balloons. They'll be made of Mylar and will be red with a big white lizard as well as the pace time on them.
There will be a pre-race meeting for all pacers at the Fulton Pub (after the Fulton run) at 7:15PM on Wednesday October 3. The Fulton Pub is at 0618 SW Nebraska Street, Portland OR 97239.

24-MILE AID STATION
Once again, Team Red Lizard will be operating the infamous 24-Mile Aid Station. This year, this aid station will be located 24 miles from the start (hey, why not?) at North Interstate Avenue and North Clark Avenue, 1/4 mile west of the Broadway bridge.
At this point in the marathon most of the runners and walkers are running low on energy. That's where we come in. Can you spell HIGH ENERGY? Can you cheer like a maniac and hand out cups of water to thirsty participants while the music is cranking? Then we need you on that wall! We need you on that Aid Station!

TRL will once again have a booth at the Portland Marathon Sports and Fitness Expo at the Hilton Hotel (SW 6th Ave and SW Salmon St.) in downtown Portland. The Expo will be open 11AM-8PM on Friday October 5th and 9AM-6PM on Saturday October 6th.
At the booth, we'll be passing out the TRL pace bands that show the "even effort" splits for lots of paces. We'll also answer questions from participants. It's a great opportunity to talk marathons with tons of very nice people. Some have lots of marathon experience and some have none. So you get all kinds of questions. The one constant is the positive energy from everyone. It's a blast!
To sign up for a stint at the booth, contact Steve Trautwein at Steve.Trautwein@CH2M.com.
